This project includes the renovation and extension with the new construction of the sport hall by laminated timber (CLT) and KIELSTEG which will be equipped with lockers, changing rooms and bathroom facilities on 865 m² of surface, plus development of the courtyard.

The school has registered 96 students on September 2014 and it is expected to enlarge its capacity by 96 students every year until 2020 to reach the prospect number of 576-student capacity.

This project included 3 main steps; all realized by our team:

  • The renovation and sustainable extension of the existing school

  • The construction of the new sport hall by laminated timber (CLT) and KIELSTEG, equipped with lockers, changing rooms and bathroom facilities on 865 m² of surface

  • The development of the courtyard.

The school has registered 96 students on September 2014, today, it is hosting 576 students in brand new premises: classrooms, laboratories, refectory, sport hall, welcome desk, courtyard …The project respects the DNA of the school which is based on the possibility for children and adults to meet and exchange in informal spaces allowing another approach to learning and knowledge.

The architectural project developed by ARTER is anchored in an ecological vision and presents a series of options based on the sustainability of the construction and the principle of circular economy. Thus, old industrial buildings have been rehabilitated for school use and the sports hall. The structural and finishing materials were chosen based on their low ecological footprint and possible reuse.

The project also integrates green roofs and the reuse of rainwater to supply the buildings' sanitary facilities.

Finally, the different spaces have been designed for multiple use, particularly for evening and weekend use by the neighbourhood's residents.
